Vote YES for Conservation!

St. Clair County voters will decide in November on a property tax increase that would collect around $600,000 for the local Conservation District programs. With the elimination of funding to Conservation Districts across the state, the St. Clair Conservation District saw this as the only option to keep a locally driven agency alive. On Wednesday, May 19, 2010, the St. Clair County Board of Commissioners approved the District’s millage proposal which will appear on the November 2010 General Election ballot. The proposal states…

Shall the County of St. Clair, Michigan, increase the tax limitation on the total amount of general ad valorem taxes for the purpose of providing funding for the St. Clair Conservation District, up to .0001 mill ($0.10 per $1000) of the taxable value of such property as finally equalized, and levy such millage, for a period of 10 years (commencing in 2010 to the year 2020), which if fully levied is estimated to raise up to $600,000 in the first year, for the purpose of funding the St. Clair Conservation District’s Natural Resource Conservation Programs within St. Clair County?

The funds raised would be used to reinstate many programs that the District has lost in recent years including forestry and wildlife which are in great demand in the county. Along with the reinstatement of programs, the millage will allow for an Education & Outreach Coordinator who would work with the schools in the county to promote the importance of our natural resources. This millage will also allow the District to provide matching funds to grants which is so critical these days.   This is just a sampling of all that can be done if the millage is passed by the citizens of our county. Friends of the St. Clair Conservation District will be established to aide in the promotion and successful passage of the millage.

Your continued support throughout this millage process is very important to us and we look forward to updating everyone on the results in the near future.
